KEYS TO JUDGING

When judging, evaluate each student-athlete based on the information that we have provided you, keeping in mind some key factors for that student-athlete and his/her individual situation:

  • Size of School: Average class size in the U.S. is 237. This number can potentially influence the number of activities/sports in which a student-athlete can participate.
  • Sport: Heisman High School Scholarship now recognizes 48 sports recognized by the International Olympic Committee in the Summer and Winter Olympic Games OR the National Federation of State High School Association. The sport must be sponsored by the candidate’s high school or be a club sport that is competitive at a state or regional level.
  • Type of Sport: Individual vs Team. This could be a factor when evaluating awards within their sport.
  • Employment: Does the candidate hold a job in addition to being a full-time student, and might this limit the candidate’s opportunity to participate in their community or school activities?
  • Leadership: Is the candidate a leader in school and in their community?
  • SAT (National Average 2016): Critical Reading: 494, Mathematics: 508, Writing: 482
  • ACT (National Average 2016): English: 20.1, Mathematics: 20.6, Reading: 21.3, Science: 20.8

Not all schools or situations are created equal. However, we must evaluate student-athletes on a level playing field to the best of our ability.
